Few designers navigate the balance of ornate and effortless quite like Anita Dongre. For a recent appearance, Janhvi Kapoor wore a custom ivory-and-gold look by the designer, styled by Ami Patel. The ensemble paired a sweeping crushed mul skirt with an intricately embroidered choli, bridging fluidity with old-world glamour.

Skipping a dupatta lets the blouse take the spotlight, meticulously decorated with zardozi, pearls, zari and crystals. The skirt softens the look—crushed light-as-air mul edged with multiple parallel gold bands, to keep the flow intact.

The blouse, a piece that looks like jewellery stitched into fabric, was embroidered with zardozi, pearls, zari and crystals. With the dupatta omitted, the blouse commanded full attention. Its detailing was elevated by a layered Swarna necklace from Dongre’s jewellery line, worn with matching bangles and earrings. A single black band on Kapoor’s wrist, intentional or not, stood out against the gold and ivory palette. It felt like an everyday marker in an otherwise ceremonial look.

Her makeup mirrored the mood with dewy skin, softly flushed cheeks and rose-toned lips, with kohl-rimmed eyes and long lashes. A small gold nose ring and red bindi on Janhvi Kapoor added a familiar, traditional flourish. Her hair, parted cleanly at the centre, was tied into a braid studded with pearls, echoing the embroidery and jewellery.

This is festivewear that moves and breathes, where craft meets comfort and tradition is styled with a lighter hand.

From Vogue’s fashion desk:

“Strip away the layered necklace and let one choker or collar necklace anchor the look. Add a bold red lip with hair in a sleek braid. This will still make the outfit look decadent without excess,” says Vogue India fashion associate Manglien Gangte.
